A northern First Nation is paving its access road and replacing the bridge in the middle of the community.
Loon River First Nation is 421 km north of Edmonton in northern Alberta. Until recently, people had to drive eight kilometres of gravel to reach the middle of the community. One of many recent projects it is working on is paving these eight kilometres. Also, Loon River was one of the First Nations which made an announcement last year about expanding Highway 686 from Peerless Lake (northeast of Loon River) to Fort McMurray. This road will be 218 km of gravel. At the moment, it takes over twice that far (648 km), as people have to drive south, then north again.
The First Nation is also replacing the bridge in middle of town.
