Danielle Smith is using the banner of provincial rights to further fossil fuel production and ignore climate change.
Last week the Alberta government exuberantly claimed a big win in its ongoing war with Ottawa.
It was also a big win for the petroleum industry, which Premier Danielle Smith constantly cheerleads, even as the rest of the world is quickly moving to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy in the war against climate change.
The occasion was the Supreme Court’s decision that parts of federal legislation that deals with the environmental consequences of large resource-based projects — the Impact Assessment Act (IAA) — are unconstitutional. Former premier Jason Kenney took the feds to court over the legislation, which he deemed the “no-more-pipelines” act and was supported by seven other premiers.
