AMC Calls for Ongoing Commitment to First Nations’ Priorities as NDP-Liberal Agreement Ends

Treaty One Territory, Winnipeg – The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) acknowledges the end of the NDP-Liberal agreement as a significant moment in the Canadian political landscape and one that could have major implications for First Nations in Manitoba. With its conclusion, AMC Grand Chief Cathy Merrick says proactive measures must be taken to ensure that commitments made to First Nations are not sidelined or compromised.

While the NDP-Liberal agreement provided some advancements on First Nations issues, it was never seen as a complete solution to the challenges faced by First Nations. With the conclusion of this agreement, there is now a need to ensure that all political parties honour the commitments made to First Nations and that they are not discarded, overlooked, or weakened either on a case-by-case basis or through an election process.

Grand Chief Cathy Merrick stresses that all parties involved in the political process must remain committed to meaningful consultation and action on First Nations’ priorities. “Our Nations deserve more than promises; we demand tangible results and real progress,” said Grand Chief Merrick. “The end of this Liberal-NDP agreement does not mark the end of our pursuit for the full recognition and implementation of First Nations’ Inherent and Treaty Rights. We will persist in holding all governments accountable as the pressure for change and implementation of our Treaty and inherent rights intensifies.”

Moving forward, the AMC will continue to engage with federal and provincial leaders to advocate for First Nations’ rights and ensure that progress toward reconciliation and equity continues. The AMC remains dedicated to protecting First Nations’ interests and ensuring that no political developments undermine progress or delay further action on critical issues affecting First Nations in Manitoba.
