Legislation introduced by ‘radical colonizer, says NAN grand chief.

Chiefs were back at Queen’s Park Monday to once again denounce legislation promising to speed up resource projects.

Bill 5 – officially called the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act – would create “special economic zones” where provincial and municipal laws, including environmental laws, could be suspended.

“The bill does not mention the consultation process with First Nations,” said Shelly Moore-Frappier, chief of Temagami First Nation, 375 kilometres north of Toronto at a news conference at Queen’s Park, the Ontario legislature. “The government has said it will uphold the Crown’s legal duty to consult, but we’ve seen these legal obligations ignored time and time again.”
