Environmental groups opposed to the transportation of spent nuclear fuel rods through Northwestern Ontario are to make their case to Shuniah council this afternoon.
Environment North and We The Nuclear Free North contend fuel rods from nuclear reactors should be stored in the immediate vicinity of reactors, and not transported to a proposed underground storage site near Ignace, or another location under consideration in southwestern Ontario.
The two groups have been calling on municipalities and First Nations to formally oppose the transportation and underground storage plan being put forward by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO).
So far this year, about 10 First Nations and municipalities have adopted resolutions opposing the transportation of spent fuel rods across their boundaries.
