Barriere Business Centre is open for business in the valley – Barriere Star Journal

June 26, 2024

The District of Barriere (DOB) held a grand opening for the newly renovated Barriere Business Centre on Friday June 21 with local officials, dignitaries, business owners and residents in attendance to applaud updated building.

In 2023 the district received approval for a $1 million grant funding from the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program to refurbish the former HY Louie Building (which was the Barriere IGA grocery store) in central downtown Barriere. The building had been empty for a number of years and with the project now completed has become the new home for Barriere & District Chamber of Commerce who will be overseeing the management of the building moving forward. The other businesses that have located to the new business centre are; Taseko Mines, Backwoods Chiropractic, and Latin Massage Therapy. According to the DOB, there is one other potential business office space available.

During the grand opening gathering at the new business centre Barriere mayor Ward Stamer acknowledged Simpcw First Nation and the recent loss of three community members there as well as offering sincere condolences to the Simpcw members on the loss of their loved ones. He also commented on the fact that June 21 was National Indigenous Peoples Day, saying, “We also are celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day. A day to honour the history, heritage and contributions of Indigenous Peoples across our nation and great province. It is a time to reflect on the cultural legacy that Indigenous communities bring to our society and to commit ourselves to fostering stronger relationship in mutual respect.”
