MONTREAL – Many Quebecers are wondering about the future of the province’s independence movement in the wake of the U-K referendum.
The province celebrated its Fete nationale yesterday, a holiday that usually serves as a rallying cry for sovereigntists.
Montrealers lining the streets for this year’s parade suggested Britain’s vote to leave the E-U could boost Quebec’s independence movement.
But with no provincial election until 2018, and the sovereigntist Parti Quebecois without a leader, any referendum is likely years away.
And those vying for the P-Q leadership are being cautious about drawing conclusions from the so-called Brexit.
Perceived front-runner Alexandre Cloutier says there are many differences between Quebec’s situation and Britain’s.
But he commended governments around the world for accepting the result.
