Bruce Power has been presented with the 2021 Workplace Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Champion award by Electricity Human Resources Canada.

The Workplace Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Champion Award is given to an employer in Canada’s electricity sector during Electricity Human Resource’s Canada annual awards, an event dedicated to the electricity industry workforce, recognizing and highlighting the outstanding achievements of those at the forefront of industry HR best practice and leadership.

“This was a proud moment for Bruce Power and our HR team,” said Cathy Sprague, Bruce Power’s Executive Vice President of Human Resources. “We have made a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion because it’s the right thing to do and it is reflected in our bright, diverse workforce at Bruce Power.”

A key component of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy is focused on talent and promotion of women and visible minorities to shift the composition of our workforce. This includes a detailed review on our current composition and engaging and educating our leaders to support our organizational goals. Our focus on talent includes attracting, developing and promoting diverse qualified talent through our programs.

Key accomplishments of the program that were highlighted include:

Focus on gender diversity, including:

  • Increasing the percentage of women across the organization, specifically focused on non-traditional roles with great success within Nuclear Operations and Equipment Performance.
  • Partnering with Ontario Tech University, with a commitment to hire women from their engineering program annually.
  • Partnering with various non-profit organizations such as #BuildADream to encourage young women in trades.

Focus on the Indigenous Employment Program, includes:

  • Indigenous Education and Work Experience Opportunity, which assists Indigenous people in obtaining the educational requirements necessary by offering full tuition sponsorship.
  • Power Workers Union (PWU) Indigenous Internship Program, which provides employment opportunities to Indigenous community members to gain work experience at Bruce Power, providing industry experience and personal development opportunities.
  • The Pre-Apprentice Millwright Program, which educated and prepared seven indigenous individuals to successfully enter into a full Millwright Apprenticeship program in 2021.

Bruce Power and its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program are focused on these and other sustainable initiatives to foster a workplace that provides opportunities for everyone.
