Can AI be a tool for Indigenous language revitalization? – Cabin Radio

Researchers are trying to create apps, software and artificial intelligence to help revitalize Indigenous languages across Canada.

Many Indigenous languages, including those in the Northwest Territories, have been left endangered by generations of oppressive, colonial policy.

To combat that, technologies are being introduced like text-to-speech and readalong software, which draw on elements of artificial intelligence.

The hope is that like students of English and French, learners of any Indigenous language can ultimately enjoy the same level of digital assistance.

Technological parity was the goal of the National Research Council’s Canadian Indigenous Languages Technology Project. Launched in 2017, the project’s funding lapsed in 2020 but some of its component initiatives are still in progress.
