What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.
Exactly 568 days after then-Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland delivered what would ultimately turn out to be the final budget plan to be put forward by then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s minority Liberal government, her successor and erstwhile cabinet colleague François-Philippe Champagne is set to make his inaugural budget speech on behalf of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s minority Liberal government.
As per longstanding parliamentary tradition, the speech is expected to get underway at approximately 4 p.m., and according to his itinerary, Carney will be in his front-and-centre seat in the House of Commons when Champagne rises in his place this afternoon, although it doesn’t appear that he’s planning to make an earlier appearance during question period.
