Tragedy in Jasper prompts letter urging action before 2025 wildfire season
Wildfire mitigation concerns shared by a local forester has prompted the city to follow up on a 2021 proposal to log portions of Mount Ida.
On the Salmon Arm council meeting agenda for Aug. 12 was a letter from local registered professional forester Eric Kok, who hoped the recent tragedy in Jasper would “spur some action that can better protect our community from wildfire.”
Kok began the letter by referencing news articles suggesting poor forest management contributed to the wildfire that destroyed 358 structures in Jasper. He then referred to BC Timber Sales’ (BCTS) plans to harvest three areas at the base of Mount Ida that he said were deferred because of various concerns, including visual impact.
