Davis Lone Councillor to Vote Against Renaming June Holiday – Vocm

The newest member of St. John’s City Council voted against renaming the former St. John’s Day as National Indigenous Peoples Day—but not without hesitation.

The date was previously marked as Discovery Day in other parts of the province, since the Feast of St. John the Baptist on the Christian calendar happened to be the date on which John Cabot landed in Newfoundland in 1497 on board the Matthew.

In recent years, the official name of the holiday was changed to the June Holiday—moving away from the notion of discovery.

Council opted for the new designation yesterday, but Ward 4 Councillor Tom Davis did not go along with the recommendation. It’s not that he doesn’t accept the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission on righting the wrongs of the past, but he’s not ready to totally transform the thrust of the June holiday.
