Press Release
12 Mar 2021
The Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road Joint Venture in Canada’s Northwest Territories is advising the public of a severe winter storm that will be affecting the entire Winter Road.
A large weather front with heavy snowfall and very high winds will hit the Winter Road starting on Saturday evening (March 13, 2021) through to Tuesday morning (March 16, 2021). All Winter Road travelers should cancel their travel plans or leave the Winter Road if they are already on it. This warning includes the Spur Road to the Gahcho Kué mine.
Those remaining on the Winter Road during the storm will be subject to dangerous weather conditions. The re-opening of the Winter Road will be substantially delayed due to the expected snowfall and subsequent blocking of the road with significant snowdrifts. The Joint Venture will be suspending all Winter Road traffic by late Saturday night and withdrawing all its crews back to the camps for their safety.
