De Beers Group donates to Organizations Supporting NWT Women

Press Release

06 Dec 2022

De Beers Group is proud to donate approximately CAD$24,000 (₤15,000) to two Northwest Territories (NWT) organizations in recognition of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence.

The funding will be shared between the Yellowknife Women’s Society and the NWT Status of Women Council.

Kelly Brenton, Social Performance Manager for De Beers Group in Canada, said: “De Beers recognizes the importance of creating a safe environment for all. This philosophy is not only embedded in our operational activities but also in our commitment to building safe, empowered communities. Underpinned by our value of “Show we Care,” we are pleased to contribute to two worthy organizations, to raise awareness around gender based violence and also support those who need shelter and safety.”

Renee Sanderson, Executive Director of the Yellowknife Women’s Society, said: “During the holiday season, our shelter typically experiences a 10 per cent increase in demand for service. This donation comes at a critical time because this year has the ingredients to be even worse due to record high inflation and the pressures that come with financial insecurity.”

Teresa Hayward, Acting Project Administrator of the NWT Status of Women Council, said: “Today (December 6) is the 33rd anniversary of the murder of 14 women at Ecole Polytechnic in Montreal. This was one of the worst acts of gender-based violence in Canadian history and we want people to not only remember what happened but also recognize that gender-based violence remains a significant problem today. We are grateful to De Beers that we will be able to raise the profile of this important anniversary.”

De Beers Group has about 650 employees across Canada. The company operates the joint venture Gahcho Kué Mine in the NWT and is actively closing Snap Lake Mine in the NWT and Victor Mine in Northern Ontario. In addition, De Beers is advancing the Chidliak Project on Baffin Island, Nunavut Territory.
