Description: The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is seeking an experienced Director to lead the Economic sector and build, support, and motivate the team in the successful achievement of the Branch goals and Economic sector plans, priorities and strategic objectives. This position has the responsibility to lead the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the mandates of the AFN’s wide-ranging initiatives and advocacy issues which includes increasing opportunities to be fully and meaningfully involved in the economy and access to financial supports and capacity building measures.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Economic Development, and Infrastructure (EDI), the Director of the Economic Sector works closely with other Directors in the branch and organizationally. The goal of the EDI branch is to increase recognition of First Nations title and jurisdiction with respect to economic and infrastructure development and promote progress and better standards of living among First Nations, while supporting First Nations leadership. The Director is responsible for the strong performance of the Economic sector, implementation of the political mandates, the achievement of work plans and objectives, and effective national advocacy strategies in First Nations related issues. The incumbent develops positive, reciprocal relationships with international, national, regional, and local First Nations and mainstream leadership, while also working regularly with government officials, both regionally and nationally, industry, and technical organizations to advance and promote First Nations positions, policies, and interests in all matters related to the economy.

Who Can Apply:    Persons of First Nations descent will be given preference (s. 16(1) CHRA). Candidates must possess an undergraduate degree in business, economics, political sciences, public policy or municipal administration, or a related field of study with 3-5 years of relevant and progressive management experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and 5-7 years of positive experience working on economic development issues related to First Nations citizens and nations, and related policies and legislation. The incumbent must also possess:

  • Significant knowledge and understanding of First Nations issues and the complexities of economic relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience dealing with Indigenous Services Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Global Affairs Canada and/or other related Federal and Provincial departments and their various programs and initiatives related to First Nations.
  • Significant knowledge of programs, policies and legislations impacting First Nations involvement in agriculture, clean energy, fisheries, forestry, procurement opportunities and other sectors of the economy.
  • Demonstrated superior writing skills.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with federal, provincial, territorial, northern, urban and international governments and officials.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal & advocacy skills, management ability, leadership, teamwork and judgement.
  • Diplomacy, tact and decision-making ability; and,
  • English is the working language. Knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset(s), as is the ability to work in both official languages (English/French).
