Proposed exploratory drilling in Nova Scotia’s offshore starting next year likely won’t have a major impact on the environment, Shell Canada says.
However, a Halifax environmental group says the company’s drilling plan still needs a thorough review.
Shell said in an environmental impact statement, made public Monday, that mitigation measures and monitoring programs will be in place during its search for hydrocarbons.
“Changes to the environment and effects of these changes … are predicted to be not significant for routine project activities,” said the statement, which was filed with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.
The federal agency is conducting an environmental review of the proposed project.
