Financial support for the 2014 Saskatchewan First Nations Games continues to roll in as the event hosted in Prince Albert is set to kick off on Sunday.
During a press conference on Wednesday at the Prince Albert Grand Council building, the Northern Lights Community Development Corporation presented the games council with a donation of $150,000 to support the games running April 21-25.
Heading into its 40th year, the Games will showcase First Nations athletes from 13 regional teams across the province competing in six events including hockey, curling, volleyball, broomball, badminton and basketball.
With a high cost to run the games, the games council has already received a number of sizable donations, including most recently a $125,000 contribution from the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority on March 31.
“We are grateful to receive this generous donation,” PAGC Grand Chief Ron Michel said. “The support will help us cover the costs associated with hosting an event of this magnitude and ensure a positive, lasting and memorable experience.”
