First Nations-led solar project in Alberta secures funding – Renewables Now

The Cold Lake First Nations (CLFN) in Alberta have taken majority ownership in a new solar project that will add 19.8 MW of installed power capacity in the Canadian province.

The photovoltaic (PV) project is being developed in partnership with Elemental Energy and will be financed by the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB), Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation (AIOC), Selkirk Advisory Group, and Equitable Life of Canada. The lenders will jointly provide around CAD 48.1 million (USD 34.8m/EUR 30.7m) in debt funding, CLFN said.

The First Nations organisation’s ownership i backed by a CAD-21-million Indigenous Community Infrastructure Initiative loan and a CAD-5.2-million Indigenous Equity Investment loan from the CIB. An additional CAD 21 million in debt was arranged by Selkirk and funded by Equitable Life.
