  • reviewing current GNWT social programming and identifying program areas that may be more effectively administered by the not-for-profit and charitable sector;

  • providing recommendations and advice from the Committee to the Deputy Minister of Executive and Indigenous Affairs in writing via the Chair.

The GNWT is seeking up to six members for the Committee with past/current experience within the not-for-profit/charitable sector. Members are expected to represent their own views and are not intended to advocate on behalf of a specific organization.

Quote(s)

“The not-for-profit/charitable sector plays an important role in our collective efforts as Northerners to close the gaps that have widened since the pandemic. The establishment of the Advisory Committee will help ensure the GNWT can better support this sector and the important work it does for residents. By creating a stronger not-for-profit sector, residents will have better access to non-governmental programs and services that will help them thrive and support efforts to create strong, vibrant communities.

– Caroline Cochrane, Premier of the Northwest Territories

Quick facts

  • The work of the External Advisory Committee is aimed at improving social conditions in the NWT, including supporting actions related to homelessness, health care, and other supports for NWT residents and businesses.
  • Membership on the Committee is by appointment of the Minister of Executive and Indigenous Affairs upon recommendation by the Deputy Minister of Executive and Indigenous Affairs.
  • The Committee will be comprised of up to six (6) members, ideally with current or past employment or involvement with the not-for-profit and charitable sector. Members will represent their own views, and are not intended to advocate on behalf of a specific organization.
  • The establishment of the committee fulfills the GNWT’s commitment in Emerging Stronger: Planning the NWT’s Social and Economic Recovery Together to undertake an internal review of supports for and issues faced by the non-governmental sector and establish an external advisory table to make recommendations to strengthen the role and capacity of organizations operating in this sector.
  • The GNWT engaged with the Standing Committee on Accountability and Oversight (AOC) on the development of the commitments in Emerging Stronger, and has provided opportunities for feedback from Indigenous and community governments, members of the public, and stakeholder organizations including the Yellowknives Dene First Nations, the Business Advisory Council, and the NWT and Yellowknife Chambers of Commerce.
