GNWT: Indigenous Capacity Building pilot program launches

Press Release

October 6, 2022

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is launching a pilot program to provide funding to Indigenous Governments and Indigenous Government Organizations to build capacity within the resource sector, as part of the GNWT’s mandate commitment to adopt a benefit retention approach to economic development.

While this funding has been available over the past few years, the formalization through a pilot program will allow the GNWT to measure where supports are needed the most, and how funding allocation and the application process can be improved.

The goal of the Indigenous Capacity Building (ICB) pilot program is to increase Indigenous capacity to participate in and benefit from the resource sector.

The pilot program will provide funding to eligible applicants under three categories:

  • Strategic planning and capacity building activities – includes workshops, meetings and sessions.
  • Training and educational opportunities – includes prospector training, Mining 101 courses and career development.
  • Attendance at conferences and tradeshows – maximum funding available to any applicant under this category is $5,000 per conference to a maximum of $15,000 per fiscal year.

Quote

“As we continue to grow our mineral and resource industries in the Northwest Territories, our partnerships remain one of our greatest strengths. The work we are doing needs many hands, approaches and perspectives to thrive. Increasing and supporting the capacity of Indigenous governments and organizations in the resource sector will benefit the territory and all residents for years to come.”

– Caroline Wawzonek, Minister of Industry Tourism and Investment

Quick facts

  • The pilot program has $100,000 funding available per year for three years: April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2025.
  • The maximum available funding to applicants is $25,000 per fiscal year.
  • Applications will be reviewed twice per year, on April 1 and October 1.
