Algoma Steel Inc and Garden River First Nation recently entered talks about moving forward with meaningful relationship based on consultation and respect.
Garden River First Nation’s Chief, some Council, along with GR legal staff, staff of the Resources Department, the ERDC Department, the Culture Department, the Capital Projects Manager and Acting CAO, recently hosted a meeting with the CAO of Algoma Steel Inc (and some of his team) at Garden River.
Both parties approached the discussions as a meet and greet with GR expressing their desire to engage in a meaningful relationship. A framework agreement was put forth by GRFN to forward the relationship between the nation and the steel plant principally based on mutual respect, understanding and meaningful consultation.
Further conversations will be taking place related to the framework, to which both parties were receptive. This meeting marks the start of a new relationship with the steel plant and GRFN which has not existed in the steel plant’s 120 years existence.
