The Hamlets Employing Youth (HEY) program offers youth in Nunavut a unique opportunity to gain valuable workplace training and mentorship over a six-month period.

HEY is designed to build employability skills through hands-on experience while earning a livable wage.

The expectation of hamlets is that they will guarantee full-time employment for youth at the end of the six-month period.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nunavut-resident youth aged 15-30, who are out of school, not returning to school, and are unemployed or underemployed.

Program Details:

  • HEY covers 75% of a youth’s salary, up to 40 hours per week.
  • For persons with disabilities, HEY covers up to 90% of the salary.
  • The remaining salary costs (25% or 10%) must be covered by the hamlet or another funding source.
  • Hamlets provide administrative costs in-kind.
  • There is no limit to the number of youths a hamlet can employ under the program.
  • Hamlets must apply on behalf of eligible youth using the forms on the Government of Nunavut website.
