Harper Government Announces Approval of Four Long-term LNG Export Licences

WHITEHORSE—As a result of a 2013 assessment of police detachment buildings in Yukon – conducted by the Department of Justice and the RCMP in consultation with the Department of Highways and Public Works – a new RCMP building will be constructed in Faro, pending legislative approval.

“The age and condition of Yukon’s police detachments were the criteria for deciding which building needed to be replaced,” Minister of Justice Mike Nixon said. “The new Faro detachment will be built in keeping with the public safety needs of the community.”

The Yukon government will adapt the new detachment design for other communities, which will provide cost savings over the long term. Funds for planning and design of the new Faro building will be allocated from the Government of Yukon 2014/15 capital budget. Yukon will provide 70 per cent of the capital and operation and maintenance funds, and Canada will provide 30 per cent through the Territorial Police Services Agreement.

“This project represents an important step in building a stronger relationship between government and the RCMP,” Pelly-Nisutlin MLA Stacey Hassard said. “We’re working closely together to meet the safety needs of Faro and the surrounding area.”

Policing in the territory is provided by the RCMP under the 20-year Territorial Police Service Agreement between Canada and Yukon. The latest agreement, which was signed last year, gives the territory more control over key areas such as costs, governance, and operational and financial accountability.

“The construction of a new detachment building is not just an important event for RCMP, but for the community,” said Chief Superintendent Peter Clark, Commanding Officer, RCMP in Yukon. “It highlights our commitment to community safety by reinforcing our visibility and accessibility and by providing our personnel with a safe, healthy and efficient working environment so that they can focus on supporting Yukoners.”
