— Freeland and Harris had their first call, in which they discussed the two Michaels and the pandemic recovery. Canada’s deputy prime minister and the U.S. vice president also talked migration after President Biden formally tasked Harris with leading efforts to stem the flow of migrants from Mexico and Central America.

— Budget boost to provinces for health: Next month’s federal budget is expected to include $7 billion to provinces for health and pandemic funding, as well as for municipalities and First Nations communities to build infrastructure as part of the economic recovery. Most of the package will consist of a one-time boost for health care.

— Cabinet minister staffers told not to appear before Commons committees: Liberal House leader Pablo Rodriguez said the Conservatives’ motion to get three members of the prime minister’s staff to testify over the WE affair was “heavy handed” partisan intimidation and an “abuse of power.” The motion says that if the prime minister appeared instead, the staffers would not be required. Rodriguez said that Liberal ministers will tell their staffers to ignore future summons and only send cabinet ministers to testify.
