Implications for Atlantic Canada’s Economy in the Pursuit of Net-Zero Emissions

Press Release

October 6, 2022

HALIFAX –  Governments, businesses and organizations in our region and around the world are committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050. The Atlantic Provinces Economic Council is launching a new research series focused on the implications of this transition for Atlantic Canada’s economy.

APEC’s first report in this new series explains the policy and business drivers behind the pursuit to achieve net-zero emissions. It also identifies the key issues to consider during this economic transition.

“There are many uncertainties that lie ahead in the Atlantic provinces’ pathways to net-zero,” says Lana Asaff, Senior Economist at APEC. “It will be key to implement actions that reduce emissions while ensuring a thriving economy.”

Climate actions in our region will have limited global impact. Atlantic Canada made up less than 6% of Canadian emissions in 2019, and Canada generated only 1.5% of 2019 global emissions. However, Atlantic Canada cannot afford to be left behind as other businesses, investors and jurisdictions place a greater emphasis on sustainability.

“It is important that businesses and other organizations realize that we are facing a major shift in how and what we produce, and how we live and travel in this transition to net-zero. There are opportunities, challenges and risks.” says Asaff. “Our goal in this research is to help raise awareness and help businesses and policy makers make informed decisions to best ensure healthy, inclusive, and sustainable growth to 2050 and beyond.”
