Intergovernmental Meeting between Northwest Territory Métis Nation and the Government of the Northwest Territories

Yellowknife – Premier R.J Simpson and Minister Jay Macdonald, met with the Northwest Territory Métis Nation (NWTMN) President Garry Bailey, Vice-President Paul Harrington, President Arthur Beck, President Trevor Beck, and President Allan Heron on November 4, 2024, for their bilateral meeting under their intergovernmental memorandum of understanding. The meeting was hosted by the GNWT in Yellowknife, NT.

The meeting focused on continuing to share information and perspectives between the two governments on the status of land claim and self-government negotiations, including challenges and areas for improvement. NWTMN and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the land, resource and self-government agreement in a manner that is equitable with other NWT Final Agreements, and to support the NWTMN to advance the resolution of outstanding issues with Canada.

  • The Intergovernmental Memorandum of Understanding recognizes the importance of the government-to-government relationship between the Northwest Territory Métis Nation and the Government of the Northwest Territories.
  • The agreement commits both governments to meet twice per year.
  • The Memorandum of Understanding between the Northwest Territory Métis Nation and the GNWT was initially signed in November 2012 and was renewed in December 2017 and in April 2022 for another four-year term.
