Canada is the best place in the world to develop natural resources responsibly from an environmental and social perspective, Ian Anderson tells John Ivison
The expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline may not be the last oil pipeline to be built in Canada, if the country’s politicians accept that it is okay to develop resources responsibly for the world, said Ian Anderson, the company’s long-time chief executive.
“Are we going to consume fewer fossil fuels as we age? I hope so. I hope we make that transition but it’s going to take decades to get there. In the meantime, let’s be proud of the riches we have,” he said.
Anderson oversaw the Trans Mountain project – which he calls “the best pipeline in the world” – from its conception in 2007 until he retired in 2022. The expansion, which cost $34 billion and involved building nearly 1,000 kilometres of new pipeline from Edmonton to B.C.’s Lower Mainland, became operational last week.
