Joe Tom Sayers seeks re-election to Batchewana First Nation council – SooToday.com

Joe Tom Sayers is seeking re-election to Batchewana First Nation council, with a campaign focused on affordable housing, elder care, and a referendum on the future of treaty annuity payments.

A descendant of Nebenaigoching, one of the original signatories of the 1850 Robinson Huron Treaty, Sayers says his leadership is rooted in traditional Anishinaabe values passed down through generations.

“As Anishenabek we inherit our values generation to generation from the beginning of time,” he said. “From my perspective, the stakes are the same today as they were in 1850 — keeping our land and values for the next generations to make sure they do not live in poverty in their own country.”
