The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC) acknowledges the recent response from the Liberal Party of Canada to the Manitoba First Nations Federal Election Priorities Document. While the commitments made are noted with respect, the AMC remains steadfast in calling for tangible, transformative change rooted in the recognition of First Nations’ rights and jurisdiction.
Grand Chief Kyra Wilson emphasized the importance of moving beyond words to measurable action: “Reconciliation is not a slogan – it is a promise. It is a responsibility. For far too long, First Nations in Manitoba have been asked to wait. That time is over. We expect this next federal government to act swiftly and decisively to fulfill Treaty obligations and support First Nations-led solutions across all sectors of life.”
While the Liberal platform makes positive strides in a number of areas including recognizing Treaties, advancing economic reconciliation, and addressing the crises of MMIWG2S+ and residential school legacies, there are a number of key gaps that remain. These include unresolved Treaty Land Entitlement claims, underfunding of essential services such as policing and dealing with the addictions crisis in First Nations, and infrastructure equity.
“We do not seek handouts or half-measures. We seek respect, recognition, and results,” said Grand Chief Wilson. “The AMC calls for a true Nation-to-Nation relationship with our AMC member Nations—one where their jurisdiction is honoured, their voices lead, and our people thrive wherever they reside in Manitoba.”
The AMC will continue to advocate for a federal government response that centers First Nations leadership and supports long-term, First Nation-controlled investments. The path to justice, equity, and healing requires commitment, not only in principle but in practice.
