Calgary police say a suspect in a home invasion is dead after he took his own life while officers were trying to catch him.

The death occurred in the city’s northeast Beddington area, where police were called last night about a break-in at a home.

Two people in the residence suffered critical stab wounds, but are now listed in stable condition.

Police tried to apprehend a person seen fleeing from the area into a nearby ball park, but he died before he could be caught.

Investigators say he was not carrying any identification. (CHQR, CTV Cgy)

Substantial rain on the weekend has helped to ease the threat from a wildfire that’s burning near two northern Manitoba communities.

Officials say the blaze is holding at just over six square kilometres and no longer poses a danger for Easterville and the Chemawawin First Nation.

Crews are tackling hot spots and a sprinkler system has been set up to protect properties.

An evacuation order remains effect for about two-thousand people, who have been put up in Winnipeg.

A Winnipeg woman has been killed in a two-vehicle crash just south of the city.

R-C-M-P say the 39-year-old victim died early yesterday morning when a car and pickup truck collided on P-T-H 207, just outside Lorette.

The woman, who was the sole occupant of the car, died at the scene while three Winnipeggers in the truck suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash. (The Canadian Press)

Firefighters had to use airbags to free an 84-year-old woman who got pinned beneath a minivan in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan.

Emergency officials say the woman was at a seniors complex early yesterday morning when she got trapped under the vehicle near the driver’s door, with the tire pressing on her body.

Two airbags slowly lifted the van before she was freed and taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Police are investigating to determine how she got pinned. (Global Sask)

The leader of Saskatchewan’s Green Party is stepping down.

Victor Lau announced Saturday at the party’s annual meeting in Moose Jaw that he is resigning after five years at the party’s helm.

A date for a leadership convention is expected later this summer.

The Green Party ran 58 candidates in the April election and garnered nearly eight-thousand votes, but did not win any seats.

A Saskatoon city councillor believes a major public work in the city should be named after Mr. Hockey.

Darren Hill hopes to table a motion at today’s meeting which seeks to have the Circle Drive South bridge named in honour of Gordie Howe, the Saskatchewan-born N-H-L legend who died earlier this month at the age of 88.

Hill posted his idea on Facebook last Friday, which garnered 15-hundred “likes” and hundreds of comments in favour of his proposal.

A rink, football field, campground and sports complex in Saskatoon have previously been named in honour of Howe. (CKOM)

(Mba-Drive-In-Destroyed)

An online fundraising campaign is underway to replace a drive-in movie screen in southwestern Manitoba that was destroyed in a weekend storm.

Wild weather on Friday night brought down the curtain at Killarney’s Shamrock Drive-In theatre, which was preparing for its first season with an expensive digital projector.

Co-owner Joanne Struss says her husband saw a huge flash of lightning and the screen was on the ground moments later.

The Shamrock is one of only three drive-ins left in Manitoba. (CBC)
