Many growth opportunities for Indigenous businesses and workers

Press Release

HALIFAX (June 28, 2022) – Growing the Indigenous economy is beneficial for the entire Atlantic economy and is a key objective for reconciliation. APEC’s latest report discusses key growth sectors in Atlantic Canada that have strong relevance to Indigenous communities and businesses.

“With a young and growing population, Indigenous people should be a part of the solution to Atlantic Canada’s labour shortages,” says report author, Fred Bergman.

The importance of sustainable partnerships is emphasized throughout the report. Lasting partnerships require trust, mutual respect, and a genuine interest in helping Indigenous communities and businesses progress.

Many opportunities in Atlantic Canada are related to our natural environment, such as resource and energy projects.

“Indigenous engagement must move beyond the consultation process and include shared economic benefits, such as equity ownership.” says Bergman.

Stewardship of natural resources should include Indigenous participation because of their position as stakeholders in the natural environment.

Report Highlights

  • Indigenous groups are making strides in their involvement in the region’s fisheries and aquaculture sector. The Mi’kmaq Coalition bought a 50% stake in Clearwater Seafoods in 2021.
  • The economy’s transition towards net-zero emissions is creating new opportunities for Indigenous participation.
  • There are many different areas for Indigenous peoples to get involved in ocean technology, such as marine research or robotics.
  • Digitalization is affecting all parts of the economy; however, Indigenous digital skills have lagged the rest of the country and need support.
  • Cultural tourism is a promising growth area for Indigenous businesses, helped by federal funding and Industry associations.
