Members of Manitoba’s Wildfire and Conservation Officer Services were recognized for their service in the province’s inaugural Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal awards ceremony, held today at the Legislative Building, Natural Resources and Northern Development Minister Scott Fielding announced.
“Today’s ceremony marks the first presentation of this distinguished award to members of Manitoba’s Wildfire and Conservation Officer Services who work hard every season to protect life, property and our important natural resources from the perils of wildfire,” said Fielding. “This recognition for their ongoing hard work and dedication is particularly timely after the challenges of the 2021 wildfire season, which Manitoba has not seen since the record-setting season of 1989.”
The minister noted 16 individuals from Manitoba’s Wildfire and Conservation Services received the prestigious Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal, which is a Governor General’s Award that honours long-service members of a recognized Canadian fire service for their good conduct and efficiency. As eligibility for this award was recently expanded to include members of Canada’s wildfire agencies, this is the first time Manitoba has held a ceremony to honour local recipients.
Canada’s Exemplary Service Medals recognize the individuals dedicated to preserving Canada’s public safety through long and outstanding public service in emergency services. Individuals with exemplary service records are eligible for this award after 20 years of service with at least 10 years performing duties involving potential risks associated with front-line service.
Nominations were driven by the peers of each medal recipient. Nominations were reviewed and approved through the Manitoba Medals Committee, which is administered by the Office of the Fire Commissioner.
