Dear Mr. Swampy:

Further to our discussion on January 29, 2021 and my February 10, 2021 letter, I would like to acknowledge your contributions to ongoing dialogue regarding federal Bill C-15, An Act respecting the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

As you are aware, on February 17, 2021, Bill C-15 reached second reading in the House of Commons, and the House of Commons has referred the Bill to the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs. The Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs is holding meetings until April 22, 2021 to hear from witnesses and discuss the subject matter of Bill C-15.

The witness testimonies presented have shown there are a wide range of views on Bill C-15 and its potential impacts. I am pleased to know that you spoke on behalf of the National Coalition of Chiefs during the March 23, 2021 Standing Committee meeting. The views you expressed are contributing to raising awareness about the risks Bill C-15 poses to investor confidence in resource development. This is a critical issue that impacts the prosperity and wellbeing of all Albertans, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike.

As I understand that this topic is important to the National Coalition of Chiefs, you may wish to continue expressing your perspectives as the Bill moves through the federal legislative process.

Thank you for your continued efforts to stand up for the interests of the National Coalition of Chiefs and responsible resource development.

Sincerely,

Rick Wilson
Minister of Indigenous Relations
