Morning Brief: Liberals survive confidence test – iPolitics

The Liberal government survived its first confidence vote since Parliament returned. The Liberals made their pandemic-related support-measures bill a confidence matter, daring the opposition to vote against it (they didn’t). But opposition members did lament the lack of debate on the bill, given its hefty price tag. Meanwhile the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CERCA) program runs out today, with no replacement at the ready.

Kady O’Malley points out in iPolitics AM that parliamentary attention will now return to the Conservatives’ official response to the throne speech.

‘Beer and popcorn‘, meet ‘cartoons and cheezies’. Alberta UCP MLA Shane Getson suggested that CERB money is being abused by some Canadians who are blowing it on Cheezies, cartoons and illegal drugs. He also called the government aid “funny money.” Best Twitter quip goes to Andrea Woo.
