Trudeau mulls new social programs: The PM is considering spending billions of dollars on new social programs, Bloomberg reports. The new initiatives could include child care and prescription drugs, and may be announced as early as next month when Chrystia Freeland delivers her fiscal statement. Trudeau is meanwhile today poised to announce more pandemic-support funding for Indigenous peoples.

Coming up: The Liberal government will announce new immigration targets later today.

Quebec courts tech: Premier Legault’s government will spend $90 million over the next five years to develop minerals used in technology like electric cars, mobile phones, and solar panels. Quebec’s mining industry has traditionally centred around iron ore, gold and base minerals, but the new initiative will focus on cobalt, graphite, lithium and rare-earth metals. Some deposits are in First Nation and Inuit territory.
