Native Council of PEI Elects New Leadership

Charlottetown, PE – The Native Council of Prince Edward Island would like to congratulate newly elected President and Chief, Lisa Cooper, and Vice President, Raymond Guimond as the result of elections held during the NCPEI Special Assembly on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Hillsborough Community Centre.

President and Chief Cooper holds a Diploma in Public Administration, Bachelor of Arts Degree, Bachelor of Education Degree and a Masters of Education from the University of Prince Edward Island. She has a long history with the Native Council, being both an active volunteer and the previous Director of Operations.

“This has been a trying time for the Native Council,” explains President and Chief Cooper, “but now we can move forward and start building the organization back up. People are ready for change, and I am excited for the future of the Native Council and to be part of that change.”

“I would like to thank the members who have put their trust in us to lead the Native Council of PEI,” states Vice President, Raymond Guimond, “There is a lot of work to be done and we have to come together as a community to move forward. We all have a responsibility to the Council.”

The Native Council has experienced a divided membership over the past few months. “I know members will be watching in the months ahead as I’m held accountable to my promise of rebuilding a stronger organization, and I welcome the challenge,” said President and Chief Cooper. “I look forward to working alongside Vice President Raymond Guimond and the Board of Directors as we continue advocating for the rights of the off-reserve Aboriginal Peoples of Prince Edward Island.”
