‘We have a very long history of putting Indigenous people in a certain light,’ says Gordon Hawkins

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — Gordon Hawkins has heard all about racism in the workplace.

He’s not a member of a racialized group, but he’s the employment coordinator for First Light in St. John’s, helping countless Indigenous individuals, mostly youth, with their employment.

Hawkins says Indigenous individuals face this issue every day, and calls it a system problem.

“In Canada, when it comes to Indigenous people, we have a racism problem, we do have a discrimination problem,” he says.
