NL Government: Applications Open for Capacity Grant Program

Press Release

October 13, 2021

Applications are now being accepted for the 2021-22 Capacity Grant Program as announced today by the Honourable John G. Abbott, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development. This is just one initiative of many that demonstrates the Provincial Government’s commitment to supporting inclusive and accessible communities.

Budget 2021 commits $250,000 for the Capacity Grant Program, which is designed to help non-profit community-based organizations, incorporated municipalities, and Indigenous governments and organizations prevent and remove barriers to inclusion.

This application-based program provides grants of up to $50,000 for eligible projects that will:

  • Build a positive image of disability;
  • Deliver services with dignity, fairness and respect;
  • Engage persons with disabilities in decision-making; and
  • Increase access to disability-related supports and accessibility in the built environment.

The deadline for applications for the 2021-22 Capacity Grant Program is Friday, December 31, 2021.

To date, the Capacity Grant Program has assisted many organizations, such as the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of the Deaf, which works to protect and promote the rights, needs and concerns of people who are Deaf or who communicate in American Sign Language. The association received a Capacity Grant in 2021 for their project entitled ‘ASL and Deaf Culture Awareness for Children and Youth’.

For more information on the Capacity Grant Program, please visit the department’s website, call toll-free 1-888-729-6279, or text 709-725-4463. Video Relay Service calls are welcome and information and applications are available in alternate formats.

“We recognize the importance of enabling persons with disabilities to become more engaged in their community and increase independence. I encourage those who share our goal of advancing accessibility and inclusion throughout the province, to reach out to my department to learn more about the Capacity Grant Program.”
Honourable John G. Abbott
Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities

“The Capacity Grant Program offered by the Disability Policy Office has been an important source of additional funding for our association. This funding has enhanced our ability to advance the message of -nothing about us without us- in our continued engagement with the non-Deaf community to ensure equitable access for our members.”
Myles Murphy
