Ontario Power Authority 2014 – 2016 Business Plan
In the 2014-2016 business plan period, the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) will continue its efforts to ensure the reliability, sustainability and cost-effectiveness of the province’s electricity system for the benefit of Ontario’s consumers.
The most significant initiatives planned for 2014-2016 are:
- engaging partners and customers across Ontario, increasing the awareness and capability of all electricity users and providing innovative energy solutions to help cost-effectively meet and exceed conservation targets
- working with partners to implement a new, innovative, cost-effective approach to the future of conservation, incorporating feedback from current consultations
- planning to ensure the adequacy and operability of the power system by: continuing to identify priorities through ongoing planning and assessment processes, including an annual update on the status and outlook of electricity demand and supply; providing context for public policy development, stakeholder discussions, procurement programs and regulatory proceedings; playing an active role in developing future regional plans; and providing advice and analysis to government
- fulfilling the government’s Long-Term Energy Plan and directives related to Ontario’s electricity supply
- strengthening community and public engagement through the establishment of a stakeholder advisory committee, revised program design and enhanced regional planning
- encouraging First Nations and Métis community participation in renewable energy, conservation and transmission initiatives, and advancing plans to offset diesel generation in remote communities by connecting them to the transmission system
- ensuring that we incorporate the principles of sustainability into the work that we do, through the development of a framework that strengthens our commitment to sustainability and includes approaches for enhanced integration and reporting
- managing and settling an increasing volume of contracts – 24,000 megawatts by the end of 2014 or two-thirds of the total electricity system
- under ministry direction, engaging with and considering input provided by stakeholders and Aboriginal communities to develop a competitive process for procurement of large renewable energy projects
- also under ministry direction, working towards supporting the long-term sustainability of the FIT and microFIT programs, non-utility generation and nuclear initiatives
- continuing efforts to further reduce expenses and the cost impact of operations on electricity consumers.
