(Military-Base-Death)

The O-P-P says foul play is not suspected in the death of a 32-year-old woman at Canadian Forces Base Trenton.

Military police had contacted provincial police on Tuesday after discovering the body of Jasmine Reid in her residence at the air base.

A post-mortem was conducted Wednesday at the Ottawa Hospital.

Although foul play is not suspected, the O-P-P and military police continue their investigation.

The O-P-P says Reid lived with her common-law spouse, who is a member of the military. (The Canadian Press)

(Grassy-Narrows-Mercury)

Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Minister David Zimmer and Environment Minister Glen Murray will visit the Grassy Narrows First Nation next week.

Zimmer and Murray, along with technical experts, will meet with Grassy Narrows leaders to discuss various reports about mercury contamination in the area and how to clean it up.

Some Grassy Narrows residents suffered mercury poisoning since Dryden Chemical dumped nine-thousand kilograms of it into the Wabigoon and English River systems during the 1960s.

The government closed the local fishery that formed the basis of the Grassy Narrows economy, but some residents ignored the order to stop eating the fish. (The Canadian Press)

(Bathhouse-Raids-Apology)

Toronto’s police chief has issued an apology for raids more than 35 years ago that targeted the city’s gay community.

Mark Saunders used a Pride reception last evening at police headquarters to address a series of raids on Toronto bathhouses that took place in 1981 that saw nearly 300 people arrested.

Most of the charges were eventually dropped.

Mayor John Tory commended Saunders for issuing the apology, calling it “right” and “necessary.” (The Canadian Press)

(London-Mayor)

London Mayor Matt Brown is back at work a week after temporarily stepping aside in the wake of admitting a brief affair with the deputy mayor.

Maureen Cassidy resigned as deputy mayor and Brown told a news conference yesterday that what occurred should never have happened.

London’s integrity commissioner looked at the disclosure by Brown and Cassidy and said in a report released earlier this week that he would not investigate further or recommend any sanctions.

Gregory Stewart says the public nature of Brown and Cassidy’s disclosures and the resulting public comment and criticism was a “significant penalty.” (The Canadian Press)

(SIU-Motorcycle-Fatal)

The province’s police watchdog is appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision between a motorcycle and a Peel Region police cruiser.

The Special Investigations Unit says the collision occurred Sunday evening on Tomken Road near Derry Road in Mississauga.

The 41-year-old man driving the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say they want to speak with anyone who saw the motorcycle or the police cruiser before the collision. (The Canadian Press)

(Officer-Shot)

A police officer wounded in an accidental shooting in Stirling-Rawdon Township, northwest of Belleville, is making good progress in recovering from the incident.

He shot himself in the hand while preparing to clean his service pistol at the police station, near Stirling, on Tuesday afternoon.

Police Chief Dario Cecchin says he was treated at a local hospital and released, and is doing well.

The officer, whose name was withheld, will miss some time from work, although the chief didn’t know how much. (CJOJ)

(OPP-Chris-Lewis)

Provincial police will hold a special ceremony today in Leamington to introduce their newest marine vessel.

The vessel will be named for Chris Lewis, who served as O-P-P commissioner from 2010 to 2014.

Lewis — a Sault Ste. Marie native — joined the force in 1978.

The 11-and-a-half-metre Chris D. Lewis is the largest vessel in the O-P-P marine fleet and was built in St. Thomas. (The Canadian Press)
