None of this, unfortunately, is new. All of it is still deeply disturbing and terrifying.
Recently, a group “demonstrated” outside of Jackson Square in Hamilton, steps away from Hamilton’s Anti-Racism Resource Centre, with a very large banner that read Mass Deportations Now in large black stencil font.
Many could link this to U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s long-standing racist calls for mass deportations, as well as his racist claims that tie old racist ideas linking immigration to criminality, disease and cost. Many could also tie this to the particular recent magnification anti-South Asian hate and anti-Muslim hatred that has been stoked, in unchecked ways in many realms of (mis- and dis-) information sharing.
We should all denounce these hateful acts, “demonstrations” and the public propagandizing of racist ideas which are wilful incitements of hatred. Elected officials here in Hamilton have rightfully called out this racism and hate publicly. More must be done. None of this, unfortunately, is new. All of it is still deeply disturbing and terrifying.
