PM announces Indigenous land claim and education agreements – 101.5 The Hawk

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau marked National Indigenous Peoples Day in Cape Breton where he made announcements related to historic claims and education infrastructure for First Nations in Nova Scotia.

Ottawa is proposing a $125-million settlement agreement with We’koqma’q First Nation to resolve a specific claim regarding the improper sale of reserve land in 1862.

The community’s 1,100 members need to vote on the agreement before it can be finalized.

Trudeau said the federal government will also provide more than $16 million per year to help Mi’kmaw communities maintain, repair and replace education infrastructure.
