Policy Analyst : Justice

The Chiefs of Ontario is looking for a qualified and motivated individual for the position of Justice Policy Analyst.  Under the supervision of the Director of Justice, this individual is expected to coordinate a wide range of complex and confidential tasks that blend project management with policy analysis on current justice issues. The project management side is focused on a legal information project raising awareness about sexual harassment in the workplace, while the policy analysis tasks span wide-ranging issues including UNDRIP and First Nations’ rights. The incumbent will provide intermediate level expertise to the position, manage confidential and time sensitive information and will serve as a primary point of contact with management.

Location:  Toronto, Ontario (Potential for Hybrid working arrangement)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement work plans regarding the Sexual Harassment in the Workplace legal information project that uses a culturally-based approach to legal information education and resources.
  • Develop strategies for the drafting and dissemination of legal information materials such as toolkits, presentations, infographics, and web content that best serves First Nations governments, employers, and employees.
  • Support the operations of the Chiefs of Ontario Justice Committee through coordination, relationship building, and agenda setting.
  • Maintain knowledge and familiarity with current and emerging First Nation justice issues, including UNDRIP legislation, the duty to consult, and First Nation law-making.
  • Participate in various meetings and functions with representatives of First Nations, provincial, and federal governments and other organizations.
  • Maintenance of an effective electronic filing system.
  • Drafting and editing correspondence, reports, internal office communications, and briefing notes.
  • Manage and oversee both large and small projects, task teams and budgets.
  • Collaborate and share information in a dynamic team environment within COO.
  • Responsible for general administrative duties as required.

Must be able to work flexible hours during busy seasons i.e. assembly seasons; out of town meetings, etc.


  • 2 years of proficient work experience in a First Nations community of organization is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of First Nations governance structure.
  • Post-secondary diploma or degree is not required, but is extremely recommended.
  • A valid driver’s licenses and any other licenses and/or certificates will be considered an asset i.e. first aid/CPR training, coaching, WHMIS, etc.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, values, and rights; in particular, the nations that reside within the boundaries of the province of Ontario.
  • Working knowledge of First Nations governance structure.
  • Exceptional knowledge of various computer applications (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint).
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely both written and orally.
  • Demonstrates the ability to stay organized in a fast paced environment.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships within the organization and external agencies or affiliates.
  • Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines. .

Successful Candidate must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

DURATION: April 2022 – March 31st, 2023 with the potential for renewal based on available funding.
