The Chiefs of Ontario is inviting applications for the position of Policy and Communications Analyst. The Analyst will be responsible for leading a range of advocacy initiatives, including in the areas of First Nations housing, infrastructure, energy, and land claims. Additionally, the Analyst will take on a supporting role in managing internal and external communications for the Chiefs of Ontario. Our ideal candidate will have strong research and writing skills, enjoy working in a rapidly changing sector, be willing to learn, and have the ability to lead complex projects.
Location: Hybrid – Remote and Chiefs of Ontario Secretariat Office, 468 Queen St East, Toronto Ontario
Policy Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct in-depth research, data collection, and analysis of policies and programs relating to First Nations in Ontario
Coordinate and actively participate during working group and committee meetings, including the Chiefs Committee on Housing and Infrastructure
Support program development by assisting in planning, research and co-ordination of projects and activities
Assist the Policy and Communications Sector with the interpretation of legislation, policies, programs, and services relevant to Ontario First Nations
Prepare position and research papers, briefing notes, presentations and policy documents
Participate in meetings and functions with representatives of First Nations, provincial, and federal governments and other organizations
Develop and maintain partnerships with government ministries, First Nation communities, and other advocacy organizations to ensure effective dialogue and collaboration between partners
Performing other duties as assigned
Travel will be required
Communications Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in the management and monitoring of social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn)
Assist the Communications Department with general administrative support including but not limited to coordination of job postings, media releases, internal and external communications, etc.
Support and assist the Policy and Communications team in the planning and execution of meetings, gatherings, and special events
Assist in the maintenance of the Chiefs of Ontario websites (WordPress, Squarespace, and Wix)
Assist Communications team with administrative tasks and other duties as required
Relevant Skills:
Bachelor’s Degree in political science, policy, communications, or other relevant field
Relevant work experience in combination with education will be considered
Experience preparing briefing notes, reports, memorandums, and policies
General knowledge of the organization and activities of the Chiefs of Ontario and current events related to First Nations in Ontario
Knowledge of First Nation traditions, cultures and values; understand the history and relationship between First Nations and the Crown is an asset
Professional integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential
Political acuity is a strong asset
Good analytical and problem solving skills
Excellent communication skills, including written and verbal
Time management, organization and planning skills
Experience with audio and video equipment an asset
Successful candidate must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19.
