The Chiefs of Ontario is inviting applications for the position of Policy Analyst. The Analyst will be responsible for leading a range of advocacy initiatives, including in the areas of First Nations housing, infrastructure, energy, and land claims. Additionally, the Analyst will take on a supporting role in managing internal and external communications for the Chiefs of Ontario. Our ideal candidate will have strong research and writing skills, enjoy working in a rapidly changing sector, be willing to learn, and have the ability to lead complex projects.

Location: Hybrid – Remote and Chiefs of Ontario Secretariat Office, 468 Queen St East, Toronto, Ontario

Policy Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth research, data collection, and analysis of policies and programs related to First Nations in Ontario
  • Liaise with political territorial organizations, both levels of government, Tribal Councils, and other First Nation organizations to facilitate a cooperative approach to achieving the political goals of the organization
  • Coordinate and actively participate during working group and committee meetings, including the Chiefs Committee on Housing and Infrastructure and the First Nations Delivery Credit Working Group
  • Support program development by assisting in planning, research and co-ordination of projects and activities
  • Assist the Policy and Communications Sector with the interpretation of legislation, policies, programs, and services relevant to Ontario First Nations
  • Prepare position and research papers, briefing notes, presentations and policy documents
  • Participate in meetings and functions with representatives of First Nations, provincial, and federal governments and other organizations
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with government ministries, First Nation communities, and other advocacy organizations to ensure effective dialogue and collaboration between partners
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Travel will be required

Relevant Skills:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in political science, policy, communications, or other relevant field
  • Relevant work experience in combination with education will be considered
  • Experience preparing briefing notes, reports, memorandums, and policies
  • General knowledge of the organization and activities of the Chiefs of Ontario and current events related to First Nations in Ontario
  • Knowledge of First Nation traditions, cultures and values; understand the history and relationship between First Nations and the Crown is an asset
  • Professional integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential
  • Political acuity is a strong asset
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, including written and verbal
  • Time management, organization and planning skills
  • Experience with audio and video equipment an asset

DURATION: ASAP to March 31, 2023, with the possibility of extension based on funding availability.
