Postville test pitting activities

Press Release

October 12, 2022

Geotechnical test pitting activities will be ongoing within the Inuit Community of Postville on High View Road (Lots 16, 18, 20). Tests pits are small holes dug prior to construction to help ensure suitable ground conditions for larger building projects. The Nunatsiavut Government is required to complete test pitting to ensure that the subgrade is adequate for constructing of various infrastructure.

An engineering consulting company has been contracted to complete detailed engineering and construction management to ensure the subdivision subgrade is adequate to support residential dwellings and accessory buildings. Test pitting is a precise investigation that gives structural and geotechnical engineers more detailed information to proceed with the design and construction of larger buildings. Undertaking geotechnical test pitting for infrastructure is a Nunatsiavut Government standard practice, which will help ensure building safety and sustainability, and is not an indication of the construction quality of a subdivision.

Digging a test pit on land helps engineers get a sense of whether or not the development location can support upcoming construction. A test pit can uncover:

  • Soil contamination
  • Buried structures
  • Unsuitable soil conditions
  • Water table location
  • Side wall stability
  • Groundwater seepage
  • Potential challenges in project structure

The biggest benefit of a test pitting is cost savings. Investigating before construction and designing these larger buildings to the existing ground conditions is a lot more cost effective then when a project has commenced.
