Premier Cochrane and Minister Wawzonek to Promote NWT Investment Potential in Toronto

Press Release

Premier Caroline Cochrane and Caroline Wawzonek, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment are in Toronto this week to promote mineral exploration and development opportunities in the Northwest Territories.

Premier Cochrane and Minister Wawzonek will participate in presentations and events at the annual convention of Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), considered the world’s premier mineral exploration and mining convention. This will also include events under the Invest Canada North (ICN) banner, which connects global investors with the competitive advantages and opportunities in Canada’s North.

They will also leverage their attendance at PDAC and proximity to Toronto’s Bay Street to meet directly with investors, companies and media representatives with current and future interests in the NWT.

“Our government is committed to growing the resource development industry that has played a significant role in our economic success for decades. To transition into the next chapter of our storied mining history with our rich critical mineral potential, we need strong partners at the Federal level and continue to make the case for significant infrastructure investment. By doing this, we will be able to capitalize on our true economic potential.”

– Caroline Cochrane, Premier of the Northwest Territories

“An exciting new chapter is emerging for mining in the NWT.  While global competition for investors is fierce, we are well positioned to not only become a supplier of critical minerals, but to be a leader in how they are resourced in both an environmental and socially responsible way. I’m looking forward to telling this story.”

– Caroline Wawzonek, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment

Quick facts

  • PDAC is the leading convention for people, governments, companies and organizations connected to mineral exploration. More than 1,100 exhibitors, 2,500 investors and 23,000 people attended the last in-person PDAC gathering in 2020.
  • Over half of the 31 critical minerals that Canada has said are critical to domestic industry, national security and emissions reduction can be found within the Northwest Territories.
  • The NWT is considered to be a leader in Environmental, Social, and Governance, or ESG principles that have become more prevalent in the mineral resources industry, with investors, demographic groups, and the general public demanding stronger ESG investments from business and industry, increasingly through a lens of  Indigenous reconciliation termed ESG-I.
