Even as the minutes ticked down to a final vote on Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s “controversial” Bill 5, which, among other measures, “would introduce ‘special economic zones,’ inside of which the province can exempt certain ‘trusted’ developers from environmental and labour laws while overriding any municipal bylaws,” provincial labour leaders made it clear that “their fight is only beginning,” Ricochet writer Jon Thompson reports.
In a piece filed hours before the bill secured the final approval of the legislature, Ontario Federation of Labour members were planning to “fill the gallery” for the final vote on the bill, which “First Nations leaders say will trample their treaty rights to free, prior, and informed consent on major project development.”
