QIA to Review NIRB Recommendation on Baffinland Iron Mines Corp.’s Mary River Project Phase 2 Proposal

Iqaluit, Nunavut –  May 13, 2022 – The Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) has received the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) Final Hearing Report on Baffinland’s proposed Mary River Project expansion. QIA is now reviewing NIRB’s recommendations to Minister Vandal regarding the Phase 2 Proposal.

QIA is the Designated Inuit Organization which owns the lands on which the Mary River Project is located, and is responsible for management of those lands and negotiation of the related Inuit Impact Benefit Agreement. QIA’s team of subject matter experts and legal counsel are thoroughly evaluating the document, and QIA will be assessing whether the recommendations regarding the Project expansion are acceptable to Inuit.  QIA will issue a statement to the public in the coming days with more details regarding QIA’s review and initial response to NIRB’s Final Hearing Report for the Project.

It is important that any information regarding the recommendation and the content of the report is thoroughly reviewed to ensure that QIA leadership is properly briefed, and all information received is taken into consideration before QIA issues further comments on the Board’s recommendations.
