Vanderhoof mayor says current Nechako water management regime prioritizes energy production over a healthy river and fish populations.
The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako has passed a resolution acknowledging the construction and operation of a dam providing power for Rio Tinto’s Kitimat aluminium smelter was done without consent of the Saik’uz, Stellat’en and Nadleh Whut’en First Nations.
The RDBN and those bands now want Rio Tinto and the provincial government to include them in decisions around management of the Nechako River, that was decimated by the construction of the Kenney Dam in the 1950s.
